The product of this gene belongs to the Serine/Threonineprotein kinase family, and to the Ca(2+)/calmodulin-dependentprotein kinase subfamily. This protein plays a role in thecalcium/calmodulin-dependent (CaM) kinase cascade byphosphorylating the downstream kinases CaMK1 and CaMK4. Seventranscript variants encoding six distinct isoforms have beenidentified for this gene. Additional splice variants have beendescribed but their full-length nature has not been determined. Theidentified isoforms exhibit a distinct ability toundergoautophosphorylation and to phosphorylate the downstream kinases.
