The protein encoded by this gene belongs to thesubtilisin-like proprotein convertase family. The members of thisfamily are proprotein convertases that process latent precursorproteins into their biologically active products. This encodedprotein mediates posttranslational endoproteolytic processing forseveral integrin alpha subunits. It is thought to process prorenin,pro-membrane type-1 matrix metalloproteinase and HIV-1 glycoproteingp160. Multiple transcript variants encoding different isoformshave been found for this gene.
